About Korea Human Rights Foundation

The Korea Human Rights Foundation is a civil society-based foundation established in 1999 by a group of human rights experts such as activists, lawyers, and academics in order to promote human rights values and culture through human rights education, research and leadership building. Its establishment was a result of a series of events organized by the Foundation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1998.

The Foundation has contributed to human rights discourse and networking among various actors and human rights defenders engaged in human rights advocacy, education and research by providing a platform such as the Jeju Human Rights Conference on Jeju island, which is known to be one of the largest gathering of human rights defenders and experts in Korea.

The Foundation has been organizing various programs for capacity and leadership building among human rights defenders such as a Model UN Human Rights Council for university students and the youth (July 2010) and thematic round table on social rights (2009).

The Foundation has initiated and currently facilitates as a focal point a multi-stake holders’ forum on business and human rights..

The Foundation awards annually the Human Rights Awards to human rights advocates who are committed to the advancement of human rights of vulnerable groups and victims in Korea.

The board of directors is composed of 14 members with various professional backgrounds under the chairpersonship of Dr. Pak Un Jong, professor of Law at the Seoul National University.
